Sightlines are Less Important to Disney Than Customer Service

There has been a lot of talk recently about Universal Studio Hollywood’s near-perfect Harry Potter Land, whose dedication to thematic unity and cohesion is second only to Knott’s Berry Farm’s gorgeous and immersive Iron Reef Experience. The “complaints” have to do with sightline “problems” where you can “see” office buildings and show buildings from most parts of the Land. Maybe this is true is guests are egregiously looking around instead of staring directly at the front facade of Hogwarts Castle and not letting their eyes wander, but honestly, what guest is going to do that? Hogwarts in California is literally the only thing anyone who’s a fan of themed entertainment cares about; if you’re going to Universal and not simply gazing up at Hogwarts and ignoring everything else, you’re simply not a Real Fan.

Unlike the hateful slew of sightline issues at Disneyland and at “Walt” Disney World in Orlando. When you’re standing in Adventureland in Disneyland, all you have to do is look up and right there, you can see The Matterhorn. Some might argue that this was also true in Walt’s Day, but as we all know, Walt Disney strategically left the Matterhorn unfinished inside, and it’s logical to believe that his future plans would include ways to hide the tallest park icon from sight from all other lands, to ensure thematic unity.  Even more abhorrent, if you are able to sneak in a telescope (particularly a maritime-grade model) into the parks, you can very clearly see parts of Main Street, USA from Frontierland. How is that acceptable?

Ditto “Walt” Disney World in Orlando. WDI must think guests are stupid, making park “icons” big enough so that you can see them from all parts of the park. For all the innovation and ambition that EPCOT Center brought to the day-one disaster that was “Walt” Disney World (a park Walt never was, remember), it seems clear that Walt would never have approved a geodesic sphere you could see from France. It’s sloppy and disastrous; Walter Elias Disney gave you the Blessing of Size, WDI, the least you could do is honor his words!

HOW DOES THIS MAKE ANY LOGICAL SENSE AS A VIEW?!
